'A Local Campaign'Back to Main Sherington Contents Page

This website was created following the disgraceful closure of The Swan in Sherington on Sunday 8th February 2009 by the Charles Wells Brewery.

Sadly, Charles Wells Brewery did not even have the courtesy of producing a formal notification to their customers of this information prior to it's closure.

On hearing the news, some of the local villagers have got together and decided to start a campaign to prevent the closure of our village pub.

We urge all locals who wish to keep The Swan open to join our campaign in publicising this poorly judged decision. A decision that appears to have been taken without any care for the villagers or impact that it will have on it's loyal customers.

If you support the campaign, then we urge you to add your name to the guestbook (at bottom of this page) as a petition to prevent it's closure.

We also urge you to contact the Charles Wells Brewery and our local MP (Mark Lancaster) to inform them of your feelings on this matter.

Kind Regards,

William 'Griff' Griffiths

(CAMPAIGN MANAGER)

Following enquiries from the MK Citizen to the Charles Wells Pub Company, Kate Hempsall (Charles Wells) gave the following response on 11th February 2009:-

The Swan, Sherington

The Swan public house in Sherington has been closed, with effect from
Friday 6th February 2009.

This decision was taken, with regret, by owners Charles Wells Pub
Company in response to the difficult trading environment currently
facing the licensed trade.

Despite the hard work and enthusiasm of licensees at the pub and the
support of the local community it hasn't been possible to maintain The
Swan as a viable and sustainable business.  As well as having a duty to
provide a great pub experience for consumers, we have a responsibility
to the licensee who operates the pub as their own business.  We don't
believe the pub offers a realistic commercial proposition for a licensee
and it's therefore been closed until further notice, and we're now
reviewing the long-term future of the site.

We always welcome feedback and a number of local residents have
contacted us since the pub closed.  We're interested in exploring all
the options available to us and are therefore organising an open meeting
to discuss the villagers' thoughts and possible solutions - which may
even include them running the pub themselves as a collective operation.
Details of this meeting will be notified to those expressing an interest
within the next week.

1st April 2009 - Members of the Campaign Team have met with Richard Bishop & Stefan Nycz from the Charles Wells Brewery Company. They are unwilling at this time to hold an open meeting with the villagers, however they have agreed to meet in the future with any interested parties or members of the village who have positive ideas or suggestions regarding the future of The Swan. This meeting was also attended by Richard Gates (Constiuency Caseworker for the Office of MP Mark Lancaster). The brewery have also agreed to re-advertise the tenancy of the pub back on their website after it was removed.

A village meeting chaired by MP Mark Lancaster was held at 7pm on Friday 17th April 2009 at The Pavilion, Perry Lane Sports and Rectreation Ground, Sherington. About 50 villagers and guests attended the meeting which ended with a resounding call for a village survey to identify 'What the villagers really want from their Swan pub?'. If you have any suggestions that you believe should be included in the questionnaire/survey then please contact 'Griff'. The plan is to create a questionnaire that is circulated to the residents of Sherington and with an electronic version also available on the Sherington.org website. We will keep you informed as soon as it is available!!!!

7th May 2009 - The online versions of the survey/questionnaire are now available. The paper copy will soon be posted to every household in the village. The deadline for returns is the 16th May 2009. The campaign team would like to thank MP Mark Lancaster's office for taking care of the questionnaire printing and arrangements. Thanks also go to Ian from the Sherington.org website for all his assistance in creating and hosting the online versions of the questionnaire.
